Historical context

Severus II was Roman emperor and a member of the Tetrarchy from 306 to 307, sharing control of the western Roman Empire with Constantine I during a brief reign marked by civil war against Maxentius. This coin commemorates Diocletian, who had created the Tetrarchy in 293 and stabilised the empire before abdicating in 305. It was struck at Lugdunum (modern Lyon, France), the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône.
