Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze AE2 piece bears the obverse inscription "IMP C CONSTANTINVS P F AVG" accompanying the bust of Constantine I. The reverse features Sol standing with a chlamys, raising his right hand while holding a globe in his left hand, paired with the legend "SOLI IN-VI-CTO COMITI" or "SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI". Although Constantine became the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity, he lived much of his life as a pagan.
