Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305 alongside his co-emperor Diocletian. Holding the title of Augustus, he campaigned extensively across Gaul and the Rhine frontier, while his subordinate Constantius fought to recover Britain from Carausius and his successor Allectus. Following the conclusion of his campaigns in Hispania and Mauretania in 298, Maximian resided in Italy until his abdication on 1 May 305.

This gold aureus was issued at the Rome mint under Maximian's imperial authority. The denomination served as the primary gold coin of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD, having originally been valued at twenty-five silver denarii. The coin features the portrait and name of Constantius Chlorus as Caesar alongside the reverse inscription "VIRTVS - MILITVM", depicting a fortified camp gate.
