Historical context
Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337. Following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, he was proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum in 306. He subsequently engaged in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, eventually defeating Maxentius and Licinius to emerge as sole ruler in 324.
Produced at the mint of Trier, this silver issue bears the obverse title "IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a four-turreted gateway without doors, accompanied by the legend "VIRTVS - MILITVM".
