RIC VII Arelate 132. Denomination: AE2; AE3. Authority: Constantine I. Mint: Arelate. The obverse shows bust of Crispus, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right, seen from behind, with the legend CRISPVS NOB CAES.

The reverse shows mars, helmeted, draped, cuirassed, chlamys draped across left shoulder, standing right, leaning on shield with right hand and holding reversed vertical spear with left hand, with the legend PRINCIPIA - IVVENTVTIS.

Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire as emperor from AD 306 to 337. After being proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, becoming sole ruler of the empire by 324. During his reign, Constantine restructured civil and military governance and reorganised the Roman army.

This bronze AE2 or AE3 coinage was issued under the authority of Constantine I from the mint at Arelate.
