Historical context

This bronze coinage was struck under Constantine's authority at the mint of Arelate. Reorganised during his reign alongside major administrative reforms, the Roman military featured mobile field units and frontier-garrison troops protecting the borders. The coin bears the obverse legend "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG" alongside the reverse inscription "VIRTV-S AVGG", accompanying an architectural depiction of a camp gate with four turrets and an overhead star.
