Historical context

This bronze coinage was produced under Constantine I, who ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. After being proclaimed augustus at Eboracum in 306, he triumphed in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, establishing himself as sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. Constantine enacted extensive reforms to imperial administration and reorganised the Roman army into mobile field forces and frontier garrisons.

Struck at the mint of Arelate, the coin features the obverse legend "FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C" alongside a bust of Constantius II. The reverse depicts a camp gate with four turrets and a star above, accompanied by the inscription "VIRTV-S CAESS".
