Historical context

After emerging victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, he became sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. Among his major administrative achievements, he founded the city of Constantinople and established it as the capital of the empire.

Struck at the mint of Constantinople, this bronze coinage carries the obverse inscription "CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG" alongside the emperor's portrait. The reverse presents the legend "CONSTANTINI-ANA DAFNE" and depicts a winged, draped Victory seated on a cippus holding palms, positioned before a trophy and a kneeling captive who is spurned by Victory.
