Historical context

This bronze coinage was struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Licinius, who served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of his rule, Licinius was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, the co-author with whom he issued the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire.

Produced within the Roman imperial period, this AE2 or AE3 piece depicts Constantine I rather than the issuing authority himself. The reverse design presents the inscription "VOT/XX" enclosed within a laurel wreath, accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG". The obverse pairs this with a laureate head of Constantine I and variations of the imperial title, including "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG", "CONST-ANTINVS AVG", "CONSTA-NTINVS AVG", or "CONSTANT-INVS AVG".
