Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, becoming sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. Constantine enacted extensive administrative and military reforms, reorganised the Roman army into mobile field units and frontier-garrison troops, and founded Constantinople as the new capital.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Constantine I, this bronze piece was issued in the AE2 or AE3 denomination. The obverse features the bust of Constantine II with the inscription "CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C". The reverse depicts a camp gate with two turrets, without doors, beneath a star, accompanied by the legend "PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS".
