Historical context

Constantine I, who served as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, appointed his eldest son Crispus as caesar in March 317. Crispus held this junior imperial office and gained military distinction until his father executed him in 326. This coin was issued under Constantine's authority at Sirmium, an important Roman city located in Pannonia on the Sava river that had been proclaimed one of the empire's four capitals in 293 AD.
