Historical context

This bronze coinage was produced under the authority of Constantine I, who ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Following the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, Constantine became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. His reign saw significant administrative restructuring and religious transformation, notably the decriminalisation of Christian practice through the Edict of Milan, alongside monetary reforms to combat inflation.

Struck at the mint of Siscia, this issue features Helena, Constantine's mother, who was a Greek woman from Bithynia and later canonised as a saint. The obverse presents her bust accompanied by the title "FL HELENA - AVGVSTA". The reverse displays the personification Securitas draped with her hand on her head and an elbow resting on a column, paired with the legend "SECVRITAS - REIPVBLICE".
