Historical context

Constantine I reigned as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337 after being proclaimed augustus by his soldiers at Eboracum, eventually becoming sole ruler by 324 following victories against Maxentius and Licinius. Ticinum was an ancient municipium situated on the Ticino river in Gallia Transpadana. Its mint had previously been transferred from Mediolanum by Aurelian in 275 and remained operative until Constantine closed it in 326.
