Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, having first been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306. Following civil wars against rival emperors including Maxentius and Licinius, he established himself as sole ruler of the empire by 324. During his reign, Constantine reorganised the imperial administration and pursued extensive military campaigns against frontier tribes, such as the Franks, Alemanni, Goths, and Sarmatians.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this bronze coinage bears the obverse title of Constantine as augustus, while the reverse legend "VIRTVS - EXERCIT" accompanies imagery of a trophy flanked by two seated captives. The issue directly references the Roman military, which Constantine had reorganised into mobile field units and frontier garrison forces during his campaigns.
