Historical context
Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, was appointed Augustus alongside his brothers on 9 September 337 and ruled as Roman emperor until 361. Following the overthrow and assassination of his brother Constans by the usurper Magnentius in 350, Constantius waged civil war, ultimately defeating Magnentius in 351 and 353 to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire. This bronze issue was struck at Aquileia, a major Roman city and military colony founded in 181 BC in northeastern Italy.
