Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from 337 until his overthrow and death in 350. In 340, his eldest brother and co-emperor Constantine II invaded Italy but was defeated and killed in battle near Aquileia, allowing Constans to take control of the praetorian prefecture of Gaul. Aquileia, founded as a Roman military colony in 181 BC, was a major city in northern Italy where this gold solidus was subsequently struck. The solidus itself had been introduced in the early fourth century as a highly pure gold coin replacing the aureus.
