Historical context

Following his acclamation as Augustus by the army in Gaul on 18 January 350, the general Magnentius eliminated Emperor Constans and assumed control over most of the Western Roman Empire. Lacking a dynastic link to Constantine the Great, Magnentius sought to establish his legitimacy while facing a civil war launched by Constantius II, Constans's brother. Struck at the mint of Arelate, a major city of Gallia Narbonensis, this gold solidus belongs to his short reign between AD 350 and AD 351, before his defeat and suicide on 10 August 353.
