Solidus in gold struck at Arelate under Magnentius, AD 350–AD 351, catalogued as RIC VIII Arelate 132. Obverse: Bust of Magnentius, bareheaded, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Victory, winged, draped, standing right, holding palm over left shoulder, and Libertas, draped, standing left, holding transverse sceptre in left hand; between them, the support a plain shaft carrying a trophy. Obverse legend: IM CAE MAGN-ENTIVS AVG. Reverse legend: VICTORIA AVG LIB ROMANOR.

Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was acclaimed Augustus by the army in Gaul on 18 January 350 after replacing and killing the emperor Constans. Taking control of most of the Western Empire, Magnentius presented himself as a liberator from Constans's tyranny, though the eastern emperor Constantius II rejected his legitimacy. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early fourth century weighing around 4.45 grams, was struck under Magnentius at Arelate during the initial years of his revolt.
