Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 to 361. Elevated to Caesar in 324 and Augustus in 337 alongside his brothers, he initially ruled the eastern provinces. After the overthrow of his brother Constans by Magnentius in 350, Constantius defeated the usurper in 353, establishing himself as sole ruler of the empire during a reign marked by civil conflict and external border wars.

Struck at the mint of Arelate, this base-metal AE3 piece belongs to the imperial coinage of Constantius II. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the emperor helmeted and in military attire, holding a globe and spear, paired with the legend "SPES REI - PVBLICAE".
