Historical context

Jovian served as Roman emperor from June 363 to February 364 after being declared ruler by the army following the death of Julian during the Persian expedition. He concluded peace with the Sasanian Empire and governed the empire as a single polity for the duration of his seven-month reign, which ended with his death at Dadastana. This light miliarensis was struck under Jovian between AD 363 and AD 364 at the mint of Arelate, a major city of Gallia Narbonensis.
