Historical context
Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 until his death in 350. Raised to the rank of augustus alongside his brothers, he initially administered Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. After defeating his brother Constantine II in 340, Constans gained the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, encompassing territories such as Arelate, though his later reign witnessed ongoing political and religious tensions with his surviving co-augustus, Constantius II.
Struck at the mint of Arelate under the authority of Constans, this large AE2 bronze and billon coin features his brother and fellow ruler Constantius II. The obverse depicts Constantius II accompanied by the imperial legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG".
