Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361. A son of Constantine the Great, he initially governed the eastern empire before becoming sole ruler following civil wars against the usurper Magnentius, whom he defeated at Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353. His reign featured frequent frontier warfare against the Sasanian Empire and Germanic peoples, alongside ongoing domestic religious disputes and internal rebellions.

Produced at Constantinople, this silver siliqua represents a denomination type originating in the fourth century. The modern term siliqua denotes small, thin silver coins applied by numismatic convention on the premise that they were valued at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. Issued under Constantius II, this piece bears his obverse imperial portrait and title "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG", paired with a reverse design displaying "VOTIS/XXX/MVLTIS/XXXX" enclosed within a wreath.
