Historical context

Julian, a nephew of Constantine the Great, was raised to emperor by his soldiers in 360 and reigned as sole Roman ruler from 361 to 363. Renowned for renouncing Christianity in favour of paganism, he is traditionally remembered as Julian the Apostate. Between 361 and 363, this gold solidus was struck at Constantinople, the imperial capital established on the site of Byzantium in 324 and inaugurated in 330.
