Historical context

Constantinople was founded in 324 by Constantine the Great on the site of Byzantium and became the new eastern capital of the Roman Empire in 330. Following the death of Constantine I, his sons Constantine II and Constantius II became augusti alongside their brother Constans on 9 September 337. Constantius II governed the eastern empire, while Constantine II ruled Gaul, Hispania, and Britain until he died during a conflict with Constans in 340.
