Historical context

Jovian became Roman emperor in June 363 after Julian died fighting on his Persian expedition, having been proclaimed successor by the Roman army. His reign marked the end of the imperial revival of polytheism and proved to be the final one in which a single emperor governed the entire empire for the whole of his rule. Jovian spent his brief seven-month reign journeying towards Constantinople after concluding a peace with the Sasanian Empire, though he died at Dadastana in February 364 before reaching the capital. This coin was minted between AD 363 and AD 364 at Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, a flourishing ancient city on the Propontis in Thrace.
