Historical context

Constantius II was elevated to Caesar in 324 and ruled as Augustus from 337 until 361. Following the death of his brother Constans in 350 and the defeat of the usurper Magnentius at the Battle of Mons Seleucus in 353, Constantius II became sole ruler of the Roman Empire. This silver siliqua was struck between AD 353 and AD 355 at Lugdunum, an important city in Gaul that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
