Historical context

Flavius Claudius Julianus, known as Julian the Apostate, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 after his appointment by Constantius II to govern Gaul. Proclaimed emperor by his troops at Lutetia in 360, he became sole Roman emperor following Constantius's death in 361. Julian ruled until his death during a military expedition against the Sasanian Empire in 363.

This bronze AE3 piece was produced under Julian's imperial authority at the mint of Lugdunum. The obverse depicts the emperor with a beard, helmet, pearl diadem, and cuirass, carrying a spear and shield alongside the legend "D N FL CL IVLI-ANVS P F AVG". The reverse design encloses the inscription "VOT/X/MVLT/XX" within a wreath, representing the imperial vows undertaken during his reign.
