Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 to 350 after being raised to augustus alongside his brothers. Following a civil war in 340 in which his elder brother Constantine II was killed near Aquileia, Constans secured the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, adding to his territories in Italy, Illyricum, and Africa until he was overthrown by Magnentius in January 350. This coin was struck under his authority at Lugdunum, an important Roman city founded in 43 BC that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
