Solidus in gold struck at Mediolanum under Constantius II, AD 352–AD 357, catalogued as RIC VIII Mediolanum 2. Obverse: Bust of Constantius II, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Roma, helmeted, draped, enthroned front, and Constantinopolis, draped, enthroned left, head left, supporting a wreath inscribed VOT/XXX/MVLT/XXXX; Roma holding spear in left hand; Constantinopolis holding Victory on globe in right hand and sceptre in left hand, her right foot on prow. Obverse legend: FL IVL CONSTAN-TIVS PERP AVG. Reverse legend: GLORIA - REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 until 361. After defeating the usurper Magnentius at the battles of Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353, Constantius became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. This gold solidus was struck between AD 352 and AD 357 at Mediolanum, the ancient city where Milan now stands, which served as an important Roman centre and informal capital of the Western Roman Empire.
