Solidus in gold struck at Nicomedia under Julian the Apostate, AD 361–AD 363, catalogued as RIC VIII Nicomedia 115. Obverse: Bust of Julian, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Soldier, helmeted, draped, cuirassed, standing right, head left, placing right hand on head of kneeling captive and holding vertical trophy in left hand. Obverse legend: FL CL IVLIA-NVS PP AVG. Reverse legend: VIRTVS EXERCI-TVS ROMANORVM.

Historical context

Julian, remembered as Julian the Apostate for his renunciation of Christianity and promotion of Neoplatonic Hellenism, served as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. The solidus was introduced in the early 4th century as a highly pure gold denomination of the Later Roman Empire, replacing the aureus. This piece was struck at Nicomedia, an ancient city that had served as the senior eastern capital of the Roman Empire from 286 until Constantine the Great relocated the capital to Constantinople in 330.
