Historical context

Julian served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360, appointed by his cousin Constantius II to govern Gaul, before being proclaimed emperor by his troops in 360. Following Constantius II's death, Julian ruled as sole Roman emperor from 361 to 363, initiating an ambitious expedition against the Sasanian Empire in 363 that culminated in his mortal wounding at the Battle of Samarra. This coin was struck at Nicomedia, an ancient city that had served as the eastern capital of the Roman Empire under Diocletian during the Tetrarchy system.
