Historical context

Jovian served in the imperial bodyguard and was proclaimed Roman emperor by the army in June 363 after Julian died fighting the Sasanian Empire. Governing as sole emperor, he concluded peace with Persia and spent his brief seven-month reign journeying toward Constantinople before dying at Dadastana in February 364. This gold solidus, a currency introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, was struck during Jovian's reign at Nicomedia, an ancient city that had previously served as the eastern capital under Diocletian.
