Historical context

Jovian served as Roman emperor from June 363 to February 364, having been declared successor by the exhausted Roman army after Julian was killed in battle during his Persian expedition. Unable to cross the Tigris, Jovian concluded peace with the Sasanian Empire on humiliating terms and spent the remainder of his seven-month reign journeying towards Constantinople before dying at Dadastana. He was the last emperor to govern the Roman Empire as a single polity for the whole of his reign. This coin was produced at Nicomedia, an ancient city that had previously served as the eastern capital of the Roman Empire under Diocletian.
