Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, having been elevated to the rank of Caesar in 324 by his father, Constantine the Great. Following the overthrow and assassination of his brother Constans in 350, Constantius waged civil war against the usurper Magnentius. In 351, Constantius elevated his cousin Constantius Gallus to the subordinate rank of Caesar to govern in the east, before having him executed three years later.

Struck at the mint of Nicomedia under the authority of Constantius II, this large AE2 bronze and billon coin features Constantius Gallus with the obverse title "D N FL CL CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES". The reverse pairs the legend "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO" with an image of a helmeted soldier spearing a fallen horseman who wears a cap and extends an arm towards his attacker.
