Historical context

Constans was Roman emperor from 337 to 350, having been elevated to Augustus alongside his brothers after the death of their father, Constantine the Great. After defeating his eldest brother Constantine II in 340, Constans ruled the western Roman provinces while his brother Constantius II governed the east. Despite tensions between the surviving brothers over religious and political issues, Constans struck this coinage at Rome portraying Constantius II, reflecting their shared imperial authority prior to Constans's overthrow by Magnentius in 350.
