Historical context

Constantine II, the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta, became Roman emperor in 337, ruling Gaul, Hispania, and Britain alongside his younger brothers. His youngest brother, Constans, was made augustus in September 337 and assigned the praetorian prefectures of Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. Constantine II attempted to assert his rights of primogeniture over Constans, leading to a conflict in which Constantine was killed during an invasion of Italy in 340. Struck at Rome under Constantine II, this coinage features the bust of Constans.
