Historical context

Magnus Magnentius was acclaimed Augustus by the army in Gaul on 18 January 350 to replace the unpopular emperor Constans. After quickly killing Constans, he gained control of most of the Western Roman Empire. However, Constantius II, the Eastern emperor and brother of Constans, refused to recognise Magnentius's legitimacy, precipitating three years of civil war that ended with Magnentius's defeat and suicide on 10 August 353.

Struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Magnentius, this large bronze and billon AE2 features Constantius II rather than the usurper himself. The obverse depicts Constantius II with the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "GLORIA ROMANORVM" and portrays Constantius II on horseback spearing a kneeling barbarian beside a shield and broken spear.
