Historical context

Following the death of Constantine I, his sons rejected sharing power with their cousins Dalmatius and Hannibalianus, leading to killings that secured their succession. In September 337, Constans became augustus alongside his brothers, including Constantine II, and took charge of the praetorian prefectures of Italy, Illyricum, and Africa. Constantine II, who ruled Gaul, Hispania, and Britain, believed in his rights of primogeniture and sought to exert them over his youngest brother. This tension eventually led to civil war when Constantine II invaded Italy in 340, where he was defeated and killed by Constans's forces.
