Historical context

Having originally shared the empire with his brothers, he eventually became sole ruler after fighting a civil war against the usurper Magnentius, who had overthrown Constans in 350. Constantius defeated Magnentius at Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353, maintaining Roman authority during a reign characterised by border conflicts and internal strife.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze and billon AE3 piece represents the coinage issued under Constantius II. The obverse presents his imperial portrait accompanied by the legend "D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a helmeted soldier spearing a fallen horseman who extends his left arm, paired with the legend "FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO", referencing imperial military victory during a turbulent period of internal civil war and external border engagements.
