Historical context

Constantine II, the second son of Constantine I and his wife Flavia Maxima Fausta, was proclaimed caesar shortly after his birth in 316. Following his father's death, Constantine II and his brother Constantius II rejected a power-sharing arrangement with their cousins, leading Constantius II to order the killings of male relatives including Dalmatius and Hannibalianus. Constantine II ruled Gaul, Hispania, and Britain from 337 until his death during an invasion of Italy in 340.
