Historical context

Julian, remembered in the Christian tradition as Julian the Apostate for renouncing Christianity, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 and Roman emperor from 361 to 363. Proclaimed emperor by his troops at Lutetia in 360, he assumed sole rule following the death of his cousin Constantius II. This gold solidus was struck at Rome during his brief reign between AD 361 and AD 363. In 363, Julian launched an ambitious campaign against the Sasanian Empire, where he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Samarra.
