Historical context

Jovian was proclaimed Roman emperor in June 363 by the Roman army following the death of Julian on his Persian expedition. Faced with difficult conditions and unable to cross the Tigris, Jovian concluded a humiliating peace treaty with the Sasanian Empire. His brief reign of seven months ended with his death at Dadastana in February 364 while travelling towards Constantinople. Struck at the imperial capital of Rome, this coinage dates to the final administration that governed the Roman Empire as a single unified polity for the entirety of an emperor's rule.
