Historical context

Constantine II was Roman emperor from 337 to 340, having previously served four consulships and held the rank of caesar since shortly after his birth in 316. Following the death of his father, Emperor Constantine I, he ascended the throne alongside his two younger brothers, governing Gaul, Hispania, and Britain. Tensions over primogeniture led Constantine II to challenge his youngest brother, Constans, resulting in Constantine II's death during an invasion of Italy in 340 and his subsequent damnatio memoriae.
