Solidus in gold struck at Sirmium under Constantius II, AD 351–AD 355, catalogued as RIC VIII Sirmium 1. Obverse: Bust of Constantius II, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Roma, helmeted, draped, enthroned front, and Constantinopolis, draped, enthroned left, head left, supporting a shield inscribed VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX; Roma holding spear in left hand; Constantinopolis holding sceptre in left hand, her right foot on prow. Obverse legend: FL IVL CONSTAN-TIVS PERP AVG. Reverse legend: GLORIA - REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

Constantius II, a son of Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from 337 until 361. After his brother Constans was overthrown and assassinated in 350, Constantius waged civil war against the usurper Magnentius, defeating him at Mursa Major in 351 and Mons Seleucus in 353 to become the sole ruler of the empire. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, was produced between AD 351 and AD 355 at Sirmium, a former imperial capital located in Pannonia.
