Light miliarensis in silver struck at Sirmium under Julian the Apostate, AD 361–AD 363, catalogued as RIC VIII Sirmium 101. Obverse: Bust of Julian, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Soldier, helmeted, draped, cuirassed, standing front, head right, holding inverted spear in right hand and resting left hand on shield. Obverse legend: FL CL IVLIA-NVS PP AVG. Reverse legend: VIRTVS E-XERCITVS.

Historical context

Julian, a nephew of Constantine the Great, served as Caesar of Western Rome from 355 to 360 before reigning as Roman emperor from 361 to 363. His rule ended when he was mortally wounded during the Battle of Samarra in 363 amidst a military campaign against the Sasanian Empire. Struck during his reign, this light miliarensis represents a denomination first introduced under Constantine, with eighteen light miliarensia valuing one gold solidus. It was produced at Sirmium, an ancient city on the Sava river that had been proclaimed one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire in 293 AD.
