Historical context

Jovian served as Roman emperor from June 363 until his death in February 364, having been acclaimed by the Roman army following the death of Julian during his Persian expedition. A Christian ruler, he concluded peace on humiliating terms with the Sasanian Empire before dying at Dadastana on his journey towards Constantinople. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, was produced at Sirmium, a major imperial capital located in Pannonia.
