Solidus in gold struck at Siscia under Constantius II, AD 350, catalogued as RIC VIII Siscia 260. Obverse: Bust of Vetranio, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Vetranio, diademed, draped, cuirassed, standing front, head left, holding standard with Chi-Rho on banner in right hand and spear in left hand; to right, Victory standing, crowning him with wreath and holding palm. Obverse legend: D N VETRA-NIO P F AVG. Reverse legend: SALVATOR - REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

In AD 350, following the assassination of the Western Roman emperor Constans by Magnentius, Vetranio emerged briefly as an imperial usurper and emperor controlling Illyricum. His brief rule stood between the rival regimes of Magnentius and Constantius II, who had been Roman emperor since 337. This gold solidus, dated to AD 350, was struck at the mint of Siscia in the name of Vetranio before he capitulated to Constantius II.
