Historical context

Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361, following his initial appointment as Caesar in 324 by Constantine the Great. His reign was marked by external conflict with the Sasanian Empire as well as internal challenges from rival claimants. In 350, the usurper Vetranio briefly held imperial power and controlled Illyricum before yielding to Constantius II. This light miliarensis, a large silver denomination introduced in the early 4th century, was issued during that political crisis from the mint at Siscia.
