Historical context

Constans, the youngest son of Constantine the Great, was appointed caesar in 333 and became augustus in September 337 alongside his brothers. Following a civil war in 340, during which Constantine II invaded Italy and was killed near Aquileia, Constans acquired the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, the territory containing the mint at Trier. He subsequently campaigned against the Franks and visited Roman Britain before being overthrown and killed by Magnentius in 350.

Struck at Trier, this AE3 bronze and billon coin features Constans on the obverse bearing the imperial title with the legend "CONSTAN-S P F AVG". The reverse depicts two winged Victories standing facing each other, each holding a wreath and a palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "VICTORAE DD AVGGQ NN".
