Historical context

On 18 January 350, the army acclaimed him Augustus to replace Constans. Magnentius killed Constans and took control over most of the Western Empire. Constantius II refused to recognise him, sparking three years of civil war until Magnentius committed suicide on 10 August 353 after defeat at Mons Seleucus.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this Large AE2 coinage dates to Magnentius's short period in power. Lacking dynastic ties to Constantine the Great, much of his reign was devoted to asserting his legitimacy across the western provinces. The obverse presents the ruler under the title "D N MAGNEN-TIVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the legend "GLORIA ROMANORVM" accompanied by the emperor spearing a kneeling barbarian.
